How to Take Better Photos for Your Business (Even If You’re a Beginner!)

Why Good Photography Matters for Your Brand

As a successful professional, you know that in today’s digital world, visual storytelling is everything. Whether you’re posting on LinkedIn, updating your website, or sharing behind-the-scenes moments, high-quality images help build trust and engagement. But what if you’re not a professional photographer? No worries, I’ve got you covered!

Here are 5 tips to walk you through simple, effective photography basics so you can capture great images for your business—without needing expensive gear or years of experience.

1. Composition: How to Frame Your Shots Like a Pro

Composition really is my number 1 - when I get asked to take photos on people's phones this is the single thing I have control of, and it really is the most obvious difference in why my photos are great and Aunt Lil's are not. 'Composition' just refers to how you arrange elements, people or things in your photo. Try these easy techniques:

🎯 Rule of Thirds – Imagine your frame divided into a 3x3 grid. Place key elements along these lines for balanced images.

🎯 Leading Lines – Use roads, fences, or desk edges to guide the viewer’s eye toward the subject.

🎯 Negative Space – Leaving empty space around your subject makes the image feel clean and professional.

2. Camera Settings: Keep It Simple

You don’t need a fancy DSLR—your smartphone camera can do wonders!

📱 Use Portrait Mode – Great for headshots and product photography.

📱 Tap to Focus – Always tap on your subject to ensure sharp focus.

3. Understanding Light: The Secret to Great Photos

Light is the foundation of photography. Here’s how to use it to your advantage:

Natural Light is Your Best Friend – Position yourself near a window (but not in direct sunlight - behind a voile curtain is perfect!) or shoot outdoors for soft, flattering light.

Avoid Harsh Shadows – Midday sun can create strong shadows (and some weird shames in your photos!); opt for early morning or late afternoon light.

Use Reflectors – I know you're not going to go to the effort of getting a white poster board to bounce light onto your subject/yourself, to fill in the shadows, so a really good tip is when you're outside in bright sunshine, find a light coloured wall (that's preferably anything but blue) and stand close to it - the indirect reflective light that comes off of that will be soft and flattering.

4. Editing: The Final Touch

Even a good photo can be enhanced with simple edits.

🖌 Brightness & Contrast – Adjust to make colors pop.

🖌 Crop & Straighten – Remove distractions and align your subject.

🖌 Use Presets – Apps like Lightroom offer easy one-click edits.
